Acne is one of the most common skin problems affecting men and women. The sudden out-break of an acne can be extremely de-motivating and have an adverse effect on confidence of an individual. However, with timely care, the general acne can be nipped off in the bud. Although almost everyone gets an occasional acne, very few are aware of its causes or treatment.
Acne is a skin condition that causes pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and red inflamed patches of skin. Our skin has pores and each pore opens into a follicle, which contains a hair and an oil gland. The oil glands are connected to the pore through follicles and when the follicles gets blocked or infected, an acne is formed.
Ayurveda believes that increased kapha and vata dosha and ‘rakta and medha dhatu’ are involved in causing this disease. The most important contributory factors in this condition is diet, as improper dietary habits may lead to acne.
Ayurvedic treatment methods
As an immediate local application, grind equal quantities of black pepper, nutmeg and sandalwood and apply on the affected area.
Clean your face with rose water 2-3 times a day.
The orange peel is another valuable treatment for acne. Pound the peel with water and apply on the affected area. Else, powder the dried peels, sift to get a fine powder and store.
Rub some nutmeg in raw milk to form a paste. Apply it on face and let it dry. Wash off with warm water. On doing this at least thrice a day, acne disappears in 3-4 days.
Grind some neem leaves with water into a fine paste and apply on the infected area. Even application of fresh mint juice on face every night, cures pimples and prevents dryness of skin.
Mix equal quantities of lemon juice and rose water. Apply on the face and keep for half-an-hour. After 15 to 20 days, this
application helps cure pimples and removes blemishes and scars.
Mix lodhra (from lodh tree), dhanyaka (coriander) and vacha (acorus calcmus) with water and apply it to face. Leave the mixture on for nearly 20 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water.
Mix turmeric, sandalwood and water in equal proportions so as to form a thick paste. Leave the mixture on face until completely dry. Wash it with warm water.
Consume a teaspoon of powdered amla (Indian gooseberry) once in the morning and once in the evening. Amla will help in cleansing the system internally.
Make a mixture of turmeric, saffron, neem, red sandalwood, basil leaves and fuller’s earth with milk. Use the paste in the form of a facepack and wash off.
Tomatoes are believed to posses several beneficial properties that reduce acne and suntan. Prepare a mixture of ripe tomatoes and cucumber juice and apply it on to face. This mixture will benefit by absorbing excess oil, tones skin and fights bacteria that prevent acne.
Cut aloe vera leaf and apply the gel on the surface of your skin to reduce acne. If you do not have access to the leaves, there are several other products such as aloe vera gel available in the market.
Make a paste of ashwagandha, majishta and yashtimadhu with water and apply on face, leave on for 20 minutes and wash off when dry with lukewarm water.
A paste of masurdal (lentil) with curd and a few drops of neem oil, if applied on the face also helps gain a good complexion and cures acne.
