Alopecia is an auto immune disease resulting in [tag]loss of hair[/tag] on the scalp in one or more, small round patches which gradually could lead to [tag]baldness[/tag] or complete hair loss. Hair loss being a major problem today, can affect people of any age group. [tag]Hair loss[/tag] could be due to side effects of medications, dietary deficiencies, [tag]hormonal imbalances[/tag] or inherited characteristics. But it is a myth that hair loss is inevitable and that it is not curable. A few forms of alopecia could be temporary.
There are different types of alopecia like diffuse alopacia, traction alopecia, cicatricial alopecia, androgenetic alopecia etc. Though the exact cause of alopecia is not known, medical science believes that the hair follicles are attacked by one’s own white blood cells in the immune system resulting in arrest of hair growth. Several causes could lead to hair loss like for instance an excess presence of DHT ([tag]Dihydrotestosterone[/tag]) in hair follicles for men, or hormonal imbalances in women during pregnancy and thereafter, could be a cause for hair fall. Other factors like high amount of sebum in the scalp, inadequate nutrition, insomnia, stress and anxiety, diseases like typhoid, anemia, viral infections, antidepressants, chemotherapy used to treat Cancer, dandruff and fungal infections and genetics could play a major role which leads to hair loss or alopecia.
[tag]Ayurveda[/tag] describes alopecia by use of terms such as “indralupt” “Khalitya” and “ruhya”. When there is a sudden loss of hair, it is considered as “indralupt”, while a long term hair loss is termed as “Khatilya”. It is believed that indralupt generally affects beard, while khatilya affects the scalp and when the entire body is affected, it is called “ruhya”. Ayurveda considers excess consumption of lavana rasa (salt) as a major cause for hair loss. Apart from this the other causes for hairloss mentioned in Ayurveda are excess exposure to water, dust, sunlight or other pollutants, excess sweating, bad sleeping habits, diseases, anxiety, depression, insomnia and an unhealthy life style.
