Dilution of flower “essences” was developed by Dr.Edward Bach. The word Bach” originated from the name Edward Bach, and is pronounced as “Batch”. The Bach flower remedies form a part of alternative medicine.

The flower remedies are produced by using the “Sun method” or the “boiling method”. Both the methods are invented by Bach. According to practitioners, Bach Flower remedies are mostly used for treating mental symptoms, which is considered as the root cause for most diseases and are all derived from substances that are non-toxic based on the concept that a “positive energy” can neutralize the “negative energy”. On the whole, there are thirty eight Bach remedies, each are prescribed for a specific set of emotional or mental problems by practitioners. Each remedy is used alone or in combination with other remedies, with the belief that each flower imparts a specific quality to the remedy. A practitioner combines a maximum of seven remedies together for every patient to meet his or her individual needs. They are useful in treating emotional and spiritual conditions like depression, insomnia, anxiety and stress.

The well known Bach Flower remedy is the “Rescue Remedy” which is a pre-blended combination of Impatiens, Rock rose, Star of Bethlehem, Clematis and Cherry Plum. These ingredients are believed to be useful in treating panic attacks, anxiety, and acute stress. It is administered in a glass bottle with an eye dropper under the tongue and is available as a small-spray bottle. Rescue is also available in the form of a “Rescue Cream”.

The Rescue Remedy and other Bach flower remedies are used on domestic animals and household pets, and it is said to have a calming effect on them and it improves behavioral problems. It is also considered useful for treating diseased plants.

The effect of a particular flower essence varies from one person to another depending on the overall health and the emotional life of the subject. There are several additional “flower remedies” which are based on the principles from original Bach remedies. These days the term “flower essences” is a common term which also refers to non-Bach flower remedies. Now, in addition to the “sun-bowl method” practiced by Bach, other techniques including non-cutting methods have been developed.
