Yoga has proven beneficial effects in pregnant women; it helps them relax and adjust to the physical demands faced during pregnancy and labor, helps in providing relief from emotional stress throughout pregnancy, provides posture flexibility, improves breathing, builds immunity and provides inner strength. On the whole, it is the best way to cure and prevent ailments that occur during pregnancy and ensures healthy growth of the baby.
There are comprehensive yoga programmes that are specially meant for pregnant woman. Enrolling in a prenatal yoga class also helps in meeting other moms-to-be and in exchanging views and ideas and to gain necessary support in embarking the journey together. Such courses usually include simple Asanas, Pranayama, Yoga Nidra and Meditation.
However, a few important precautions need to be taken care of:
- Before starting any yoga practices or classes, permission from the obstetrician should be sought.
- In case, one has already enrolled in a regular yoga class, which is not specifically meant for pregnant women, the matter should be informed to the instructor without fail, including the trimester count.
- After the first trimester, any Asanas which involves lying on the back should not be practiced, as it reduces blood flow to the uterus.
- The practice can be started immediately on confirmation of pregnancy, but ofcourse, with the consent of the obstetrician. In case for some reason, the doctor is of the opinion that the practice can be started at a later date, it can be postponed. But the other practices such as Pranayama (Except Asanas) and meditation can be commenced immediately.
