[tag]Diabetes[/tag] is characterized by excess levels of blood glucose and occurs when there is an [tag]insulin deficiency[/tag] in the body. The two common types that attributes to this disease are insulin resistance and insulin deficiency. [tag]Insulin resistance[/tag] is a condition where the pancreas produces excess insulin and the body is unable to utilize the insulin produced, and Insulin deficiency is a condition wherein due to the mal-functioning of the pancreatic cells, they are unable to produce sufficient levels of insulin required by the body. Other than insulin deficiency and resistance, the other common causes of diabetes include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pancreatitis and also hereditary factors.

[tag]Ayurveda[/tag] considers diabetes as a disease caused due to increase of kapha dosha caused by excess consumption of foods like potatoes, rice, sugar and such other fatty foods. It is also considered to be caused due to lack of exercise and due to mental stress and strain. The common symptoms include frequent urination, increase in hunger, excessive thirst, weight loss, blurry vision, extreme fatigue, skin infections etc.

Common [tag]ayurveda remedies[/tag] include diet restrictions, which is otherwise normal, except for avoiding foods that increase kapha dosha like potatoes, rice, sugar, fatty foods and avoiding alcohol. Regular physical exercise is considered a must for diabetics. Practising [tag]yogic asanas[/tag] like ‘Halasan’, ‘Paschimottanasan” are found effective.

A few effective [tag]Ayurvedic herbs[/tag] used for treating diabetics include Gurmar (gymnema sylvestre), Sagar gota (Ceasalpinia crista), Shilajit, Bel (Aegle marmelos), turmeric, triphala and neem. A few drugs prescribed by Ayurvedic physicians for curing diabetes include Chandrabrabha, Asanad tablets, Arogyavardhini, Trivanga bhasma, Shilajit vati etc.

Panchakarma is the typical [tag]Ayurvedic treatment for diabetes[/tag]. In this process [tag]herbal massages[/tag] and [tag]herbal steam sauna[/tag] is given, following which the patient is put on fasting, which helps in cleansing the body. This is followed by herbal purge which is good for liver, spleen and pancreas. Finally [tag]colon therapy[/tag] is done to cleanse the digestive tract and for reconstituting the system.

[tag]Home remedies[/tag] include boiling a few fresh mango leaves (about 15 of them) in one glass of water and leaving it over night and drinking this solution early in the morning on an empty stomach. Also drinking bitter gourd juice, or rose apple juice or juice of tender Bilva leaves or neem juice on an empty stomach would prove effective in maintaining the blood sugar levels.

Apart from the said remedies yoga and meditation is also advised by physicians.
