A sore-throat is inevitable for most of us during the winter. Although your doctor suggests antihistamines, cough syrups or lozenges, or even an antibiotic, for those of you, who wish to go natural to ease your sore-throat, here are a few expert-approved alternatives:

Turmeric: Being an excellent anti-inflammatory agent, which helps cure sore throats, gargle with warm water to which a pinch of turmeric and salt is added.

Else, mix ¼ tsp. of turmeric, a pinch of pepper and a tsp. of honey, and lick it slowly so as to smear the throat. Do this minimum thrice a day.

An extract of tulsi leaves, dry ginger powder, pepper, and 2 tsp. honey, can be consumed four to five times a day. Mix honey in warm water, adding a pinch of turmeric, and gargle several times a day until relieved.

Thripala: Make a herbal decoction of warm water, mixed with thripala or yashtimadhu and gargle. Repeat twice or thrice a day.

Dr. Isaac Mathai, Medical Director of Soukya International Holistic Health Center, Bangalore, recommends ayurvedic medicines such as karpooradi choornam or thaleesapatradi choornam, which could provide relief, if taken ¼ tsp. twice or thrice a day.

Herbal tea made of tulsi, ginger and cumin could be sipped frequently, by adding jiggery instead of sugar. Sip this twice or five times a day.

Other precautions: Fold a cotton cloth to make it a thick wad and iron it till it gets warm. Place it over the throat, repeating it 5-6 times a day. Also, take care to keep your throat covered with cotton scarf or woolen muffler during winter.

Avoid sour fruits such as pineapples, oranges and grapes when suffering with sore throat. Prior to consuming fruits, leave them out of the refrigerator for sometime, allowing them to reach the room temperature, which is ideal for consumption. Drink minimum 12 glasses of fluid, including juices, tea, water, clear vegetable/ chicken soup and green tea.

Avoid trans-fatty foods, as trans-fat molecules adhere to the throat lining, causing irritation, which leads to coughs and pain.
