The Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy treatments recommended for Cancer patients has its share of after-effects on completion of the treatment. A study conducted at the CCRYN (Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy) reveals that while undergoing the conventional treatment, regular practice of Yoga reduces the toxicity and after-effects of Chemotherapy.
The study revealed that apart from increasing body immunity, Yoga Therapy also provides physical and psychological strength necessary to combat the disease. The research was conducted on Stage 2 and Stage 3 breast cancer patients within age group of 35 to 70 yrs. They were divided into two groups “ the yoga group and the control group. All the patients underwent surgery as primary treatment and chemotherapy and radiotherapy as secondary treatment. Assessments were conducted based on the reference data taken before the surgery and during and after chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The symptoms, nausea, pain, emesis and blood results were assessed in both the groups during the intervals of treatment.
The yoga group was made to practice the Physical Yoga Postures (Asanas), Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation or meditation through yoga), Pranayama (Breathing exercises) and yogic kriyas on a regular basis. The control group received only supportive counseling in addition to the treatment.
The results of the study clearly indicated that the yoga group had better pain thresholds and had more number of natural killer cell counts, which proves the immense benefit of yoga in combating such dreaded diseases.
