Most often for minor health problems, an old-fashioned remedy is what it takes for speedy recovery. Ayurveda has retained plenty of such folk cures, a few of which are mentioned here:

Nausea – For minor symptoms of nausea, try ginger ale. But for stronger one, grate half a teaspoon of ginger, boil in one cup water for five minutes. Strain and sip.

Bloating – Two tablespoons of aniseed boiled in two cups of water for three minutes. Strain, add honey, and drink.

Arthritis – Ginger compress helps soothe achy joints. Boil grated ginger until it turns pulpy. Drain water; place the pulp between soft muslin layers, and compress on the joints for three minutes. Do this several times a day.

Migraine – Mix together few drops each of peppermint oil and olive oil, and rub the mixture on to the temples.

Sore throat – Boil a glass of water to which a piece of grated ginger, a piece of liquorice, and a teaspoon of aniseed is added and continue boiling for five minutes. Add tea leaves, and milk and drink it up.

Menstrual cramps – Saturate a flannel rag with castor oil or mustard oil and place it on the abdomen. Cover it with a plastic wrap and towel. Place a heating pad on top of that and relax for fifteen minutes. If not, just heat a teaspoon of sugar with half a teaspoon each of ghee and ajwain. Gulp it along with water.

Hot flushes – As soon as the flushes are about to begin, start practicing pranayam; alternate nostril breathing – close the left nostril with a finger and breathe through the right one, then alternate. Keep doing this for several minutes.

Sinusitis – Boil a cup of water with a teaspoon of table salt (ensure that it is not more than a teaspoon), cool to room temperature, transfer to a clean bottle, and then hanging head over the side of the bed, insert a few drops on the nostrils with a dropper.

Insomnia – Place drops of lavender essential oil, underneath the pillow. Its calming and soothing smell induces sleep.
