Haritaki[/tag] ([tag]Myrobalan[/tag]) is commonly found in India and the fruit of this plant is used for medicinal purposes. Haritaki is considered a good astringent, laxative, expectorant, antimicrobial, antioxidant, a tonic for nerves and used for de-worming and for rejuvenative purposes.
The fruit of this herb is one among the three herbs in “Triphala” of Ayurveda and is used in treating Sore throat, Asthma, Eye diseases, Heart diseases, Hiccup and vomiting. It can be used as a decoction or paste or powder for medicinal purposes. The fruit of Haritaki contains chemicals that have a laxative effect, as well as [tag]astringents[/tag] and tannins. Ayurvedic practitioners generally administer this herb with warm water for stimulating laxative action and with ice cold water for stimulating astringent action. The juice can be mixed with cold water and can be used as mouthwash for gum care. In addition to being a laxative, Haritaki is very nourishing and hence recommended for the weak and elderly. It is useful in treating all three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha.
However this herb should not be taken during pregnancy, severe fatigue, dehydration and Emaciation. This herb is more effective when used in combination with other [tag]herbs[/tag] and can be taken under guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner.
