Health secrets of Red Tea (Rooibos)

We are all aware of green tea and black tea and their immense health benefits. But very few of us would have known about the numerous health benefits associated with Red Tea.
Red Tea (Rooibos Tea), also known as red bush is less of tea, and more of an herbal brew, made from fermented leaves of a native South African plant. The reddish colour rendered to the tea, is due to processing of its leaves, after being chopped and dried in sun to oxidize and improve flavour. Rooibos tea or Red Tea is 100 percent pure and natural, and contains no colorants or preservatives.

Rooibos (pronounced as roy-boss) is gaining popularity in the United States due to its plentiful health benefits. Studies reveal that the tea is comparable to green tea, as it contains equal amounts of high antioxidant polyphenolic content, and shows anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic and anti-viral activity.

Rooibos, enjoyed for its fruity, mild-flavour, is a popular health beverage and is totally caffeine-free. Further, the low tannin levels, makes it a bitter astringent.

Anti-ageing properties – The antioxidants of Rooibos tea may be helpful in preventing the changes in aging brain. Experiments have revealed that tea can prevent age-related accumulation of lipid oxidation products in several regions of brain.

Rooibos Tea is less acidic than other teas, due to its low level of tannin content. Hence, it is a preferred beverage among people suffering from acid reflux.
