Individuals suffering from insomnia might face difficulty in falling asleep or might find themselves lying awake during mid-night or too early in the morning. Certain herbs help in getting to sleep and staying asleep.
Avena Sativa[tag] (Oats) – is cultivated in temperate areas and is sold as oatmeal or rolled oats. It has a mild sedative effect. The straw and seeds are rich in Vitamin B and is used as an herbal cure for insomnia. However, in case it is being used as an extract or tincture, it is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation. It is generally used as herbal extract[tag].
Celery Seed – Though the stalks of the plant are healthy and delicious, the seeds have medicinal properties and are used as tincture or a relaxant. They are used in treating anxiety, insomnia and nervousness and contain Vitamin A, B and C. However, Celery seeds, being a strong diuretic should not be used by pregnant women unless prescribed by a doctor. They are available as dried seeds, fresh seeds, oil, capsules and extracts.
Lavender oil – A few drops of lavender oil can be added to the pillow at bed time. It is calming and pleasant and will give a relaxing effect.
Chamomile – The flowers of Chamomile are used as tranquilizer for insomnia, stress and anxiety. This is not recommended for pregnant woman or for individuals who suffer from chronic disorders of digestive tract and ulcerative colitis. It can be used as tea or as a liquid extract.
[tag]Passion Flower/tag]– All parts of the plant have medicinal value and are available in the form of capsules or can be used as tea, tincture or used in combination with other herbs. The narcotic properties of the flower are used to relieve stress and to induce sleep. However, it is not used during pregnancy or lactation or in combination with other tranquilizers.
Valerian – is a perennial herb used commonly for treating stress and insomnia. It is available as capsules, tincture or can be consumed as tea.
