Diabetes has been treated with [tag]herbal medications[/tag] since times immemorial. To add to this, recent researches and studies have confirmed the efficacy of many such preparations. A few such herbs that are effective and non-toxic are covered here:
Pterocarpus marsupium (Indian Kino) – The tree is the source of the Kino of the European Pharmacopeas. The gum-resin of the plant is used in [tag]Indian medicine[/tag] and has a long history of use for [tag]Diabetes treatment[/tag] in India. The flavonoic Epicatechin, which is extracted from the plant bark, has shown regeneration of functional pancreatic beta cells.
Bitter Melon – is also known as Balsam Pear, is extensively used as a folk [tag]remedy for diabetes[/tag] and is basically a tropical vegetable. Experimental and clinical trials have clearly indicated the efficacy of the fresh juice and extract of unripe fruit in lowering blood sugar. [tag]Bitter Melon[/tag] contains various compounds that exhibit specific anti-diabetic properties. However, excessive dosages of bitter melon juice could cause [tag]abdominal pain[/tag] or [tag]diarrhea[/tag]. Children with hypoglycemia should not be given bitter melon, as this could trigger or worn low blood sugar.
Gymnema – Gymnema helps the Pancreas in producing insulin in Type 2 diabetes. In addition to improving the ability of insulin in lowering [tag]blood sugar levels[/tag] in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, it decreases the cravings for sweet. The herb is an equivalent substitute for other prescription drugs in lowering blood sugar levels. About 500mg of Gymnema extract is recommended.
Asian Ginseng – is a commonly used Chinese medicine for treating diabetes. It encourages the release of insulin by the Pancreas and also increases the number of insulin receptors. It also directly influences in lowering blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that consumption of about 200mg of Ginseng extract per day improves blood sugar control and energy levels in Type 2 diabetes.
