Ayurveda considers the imbalance of “tridoshas” which affects the scalp, as a cause for hair loss. Ayurvedic treatments for hair loss includes oral pills, powders, and other oil based applications made of herbs like bringaraj, amla, brahmi, yastimadhu, aloe vera, jatamasi, tulsi and gunja. These herbs are believed to stimulate circulation and hair growth and acts as effective disinfectants.
A few such herbal remedies are mentioned below:
- Rinsing hair with apple vinegar cedar and sage tea are found to stimulate hair growth. Chamomile or Catmint are used in final hair rinse which help in preventing hair loss.
- Licorice extract uses in Alopecia treatment.
- Massaging the scalp regularly with birch, stinging nettle, rosemary and horsetail are found effective for hair growth and helps in disinfecting the scalp. Rosemary helps in preventing dandruff which is one of the major factors for hair loss. Also a handful of rosemary can be added to water used for rinsing which should be simmered to ten to fifteen minutes and left to cool. The strained mixture can be used for rinsing hair by adding a few drops of wheat germ oil. This can also be used as a conditioner after using a mild herbal shampoo.
- Drinking herbal tea made by mixing equal proportions of brahmi and jatamansi in hot water is considered effective in combating stress which is a cause for hair loss.
- Studies indicate that eating about three to nine grams of Psoralea seeds (Chinese herbs) regularly is found to be effective in treating baldness.
- Other Formulae like a combination of Dragon Bone and Bupleurum are found to be effective for alopecia in individuals with strong constitution and a combination of Dragon Bone and cinnamon for individuals with weak constitution.
- Arnica, marigold and southernwood are also considered effective in preventing hair loss.
