Though plenty of herbal remedies are available for treating depression, researches are still being carried out.

St. John’s wort (Hypericum Perforatum) – Studies indicates that St.John’s wort could be an effective tricyclic antidepressant, with little side effects. Reported side effects include fatigue, gastrointestinal complaints and sensitivity to sunlight. However, St.John’s wort should not be consumed in combination with other antidepressants and certain medications including theophylline, indinivir, oral contraceptives, digoxin, warfarin, loperamide, reserpine, and cyclosporine. St.John’s wort is recommended for mild depressions.

Other herbs recommended by herbalists for treating depression and related symptoms include:

Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) –helps the body to resist stress, which in turn is associated with depression.

Damiana (Turnera Diffusa) – helps in reducing sexual dysfunction, associated with antidepressant medications.

Valerian Root – improves symptoms of insomnia associated with depression.
