Hi Helen,

I have been studying Ayurveda for almost three years and currently practicing it in California where I live. What Ayurveda says is that although we can help to heal by using herbs and remedies but if we our lifestyle is not harmonious for our body type, healing will only be temperary. If I were you, I would still go ahead and try different herbs that could be helpful lowering blood pressure, but I would also seek out help to find out what your ayurvedic body type is and what kind of diet and lifesytle is healthy for you. We are all different. But as a genral rule, of course, eating more vegetables, avoiding prepared meals such as canned or frozen food, eating the right amount of freshly prepared food, avoiding too much dairy (especially cheese) and drinking at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily would be definitely helpful. None if these recommendations can be harmful for you or can have side effects - only, it is not easy to live in a balanced way. Yet, it is possible and if you can gradually change your habits, the change will bring you more energy, increased clarity and more happiness. And, of course, exercise is an important elemtent - with moderation. Depending on your type, you may something more rigorous or gentle like yoga stretching and deep breathing that calms the mind and the body as well.
One more thing, regarding ayurveda. High blood pressure can be caused by plaque that is hard and dry or inflamed (ayurvedically, it is a vata or pitta type of issue) or it can caused by the build up of fatty material (which is a kapha type of problem). These types need different treatments. Dryness need more moisture and lubrication, inflammation needs cooling and soothing substances, and excessive fatty material in the body needs cleansing. Good luck! Zsuzsanna
