apple a day to keep diabetics awayHere’s another study that re-confirms the old adage of “An apple a day¦.keeps the doctor away.”

According to a new study, an apple a day can significantly reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome associated with numerous chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Dr. Victor Fulgoni, who led the study, examined the data collected in 1999-2004 National Health and Examination Survey (NHES) and found that adults who ate apples, and drank apple juice or consumed apple sauce, reduced their risk of developing metabolic syndrome considerably.

The findings indicated that adults who regularly consumed apples or apple products, reduced their likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome by 27%, and were 21% less prone to develop high waist circumference.

“We found that adults who consumed apples or apple products had smaller waistlines which indicate less abdominal fat, lower blood pressure and lower risk of metabolic syndrome,” confirmed Dr. Fulgoni.

The study was presented at the Experimental Biology 2008 meeting.

Apples are also believed to be excellent sources of flavonoids and fibre, lowering cholesterol levels in blood, and reducing the risk of heart disease, and slowing the pace of growth of various types of cancerous cells.

To add to this, another recent article, published in Chennai Chronicle, April 2008 edition quotes “An apple a day, keeps woes away”. The articles describes that this ripe and juicy fruit, represents a rich and happy life for the ones who consume it, particularly so, for believers of the science of Feng Shui.
