Meditation (Transcendental Meditation in particular) has shown positive impact on various health conditions including drug addiction. In addition to this, a strong link has been established between longevity and meditation. Scientific studies have determined that only two factors can promote longevity; lowering core temperature of the body and caloric restrictions. It has been established that meditation lowers core body temperature.

Stress – Lot of people turn to meditation due to its influence in relieving stress. Stress can build up due to various pressures in life which involves, family, work and environment, which in turn contributes to hypertension, anxiety, and cardiac ailments. The amount of stress varies depending on the perspective of each individual in handling matters related to stress. Studies reveal that during meditation, there is a decline in the hormones and biochemical compounds present in the blood that pinpoint to stress. This in turn contributes to reduction in stress and anxiety.

Cancer and other chronic diseases – Meditation, being an approach towards deep relaxation, helps patients suffering from Cancer and such other chronic diseases in figuring out the way to cope with the illness and continue with life. An Australian Psychiatrist, who used meditation as a part of treatment for Cancer patients, reported that patients who regularly attended the intensive meditation, has significant decrease of depression, anxiety, pain and discomfort. Also it was reported that there was a 10% chance of remarkable decrease in the growth of tumor, while their quality of life improvement was more than 50%.

Pain Management – Meditation though does not alleviate pain, helps in coping with pain more effectively. The severity of pain in people experiencing stress will be more, in comparison to people who are relaxed. The childbirth preparation classes for pregnant women have deep breathing as part of their routine which helps in minimizing the anxiety and pain of labor. This is also called breath meditation. Also people suffering from Arthritic pain reported a reduction in pain of about 15 to 20% while practicing meditation regularly.

Hypertension – Studies has revealed that when patients with high blood pressure practiced meditation regularly for several weeks, there was a significant decrease in their average blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Pre-menstrual Syndrome – Meditation has eased the complaints associated with pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS). For instance, when one is already under severe stress, it can worsen the symptoms of PMS, as stress causes muscle tension which is associated with symptoms of PMS like aching, soreness and fatigue. With regular meditation, the body’s response to stress is reduced, thereby reducing the discomforts associated with PMS.

A lot of other diseases and health conditions such as Psoriasis, Infertility, Asthma, Insomnia, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) etc., were all found to be less severe and can be coped better by practicing meditation along with use of proper medications.
