[tag]Samana[/tag] is a crucial part of treatment by way of herbal remedies used in traditional ayurveda. The choice of herbs is based on various philosophies and due to the holistic approach of ayurveda, the combination of herbs used are also different.

After detoxification processes such as Abhiyanga or Swedhana, certain [tag]herbal remedies[/tag] are recommended by physicians for rectifying the [tag]imbalances of doshas[/tag] (vata, pitta, kapha).  As ayurveda considers diseases as the end result of imbalances in doshas, the herbal remedies that are recommended will actually have the medicinal properties of rectifying the imbalances in doshas rather than eradicating diseases. When the root cause of the disease is eliminated, the disease also naturally gets eradicated.

Herbal remedies could be in the form of dried herbs, powder, tablets or in liquid forms. Each ingredient used is classified based on the effect it has in balancing the doshas. Though the ingredients are prepared in advance to the treatment, the blends prescribed are based on individual constitution and diseases. Herbal concoctions are made by adding certain kinds of herbs to boiling water and reducing to more than half by boiling. This decoction is administered twice or thrice a day.

The food, exercise and lifestyles to be followed will be advised by the practitioner who usually prepares a diet sheet based on individual constitution and needs. In addition to this, exercises like yoga or walking are also recommended.
