Tantra yoga is the holistic approach to study the universal, keeping in mind individual point of view, involving the study of macrocosm and microcosm. Tantra yoga is based on all the sciences; numerology, astrology, alchemy, physics chemistry, ayurveda, geometry, psychology, and so on, which reveals practical methods that could be adopted for realization of the highest ideals of philosophy in day to day routine.
Tantra yoga makes use of various areas of human knowledge, instead of categorizing and separating them. In other words, Tantra yoga instead of considering each branch of the tree, studies the tree itself. Here the tree is the microcosm, a large unit of various elements interlinked to each other by a unifying law or dharma, which is innate in their very nature. Tantra yoga looks for clarification of this law.
The primary goal of Tantra yoga is to expand awareness in all states of consciousness, whether dream state, or sleep state or the awakened state. Through Tantra yoga, one can identify various methodologies, factors, feelings and thoughts and to surpass those that prove as hindrance to our evolution. The hindrances could be in the form of intolerance, ignorance, attachment to material objects and animal nature and selfishness. Through Tantra yoga practice, one can attain harmony, peace and order within oneself.
Tantra yoga emphasizes that desires are natural and it will remain as long as one is embodied. The sense organs are the windows through which the desires enter. This constant desire gives rise to love and yearning for the desired object, making individuals slaves to their own instincts leading to misery, selfishness and dissatisfaction. Tantra yoga provides practical tools for reprogramming of the mind and the desires through contemplation, pranayama, mantra japa, visualization of our divine nature.
However, Tantra yoga is said to be the most misunderstood of all yogas. Tantra yoga is the way of using rituals to experience the sacred. Though sex is part of it, it does not constitute the whole of it, as the aim of Tantra yoga is to find sacredness in everything that one does. A Tantra yogi should possess qualities such as devotion, humility, purity, cosmic love, truthfulness and dedication.
