This exercise helps in awakening from the drowsiness experienced when one wakes up every morning. This exercise helps in strengthening the vertebrae while keeping it youthful and flexible. Hence The Spinal Roll also called the rocking exercise is considered beneficial for those suffering from insomnia. Initially only rocking exercise can be practiced and later on deep breathing can be practiced along with the exercise.
- Procedure Place a mat and be seated. Draw up the knees by putting the hands underneath the knees. The hands can be either joined together or left free.
- When seated in this position, the spine will appear round in shape. Gently swing backward and forward just as one does while sitting in a rocking chair.
This exercise should be done very gently. If done too quickly, there is a chance of hitting the back against the floor. When done in the right manner, the exercise is a good massage for the spine.
With proper practice, this exercise can be repeated several times while simultaneously practicing deep breathing (inhale while rocking backwards, exhale while rocking forward). The Spinal Roll makes the spine more youthful and flexible, removes stiffness and drowsiness on waking up, is beneficial for insomnia and relaxes the nervous system.
