Though, exercises and work-outs are usually done in the mornings, even before the breakfast, a new study suggests that exercising after meals helps promote weight loss, as it increases hormones that suppress appetite.

A study was carried out by researchers at the Surrey University and Imperial College, London, with twelve volunteers who were given the same menu for breakfast.
About an hour after meal, half the volunteers were asked to work out on a bike, while the other half just had to sit idle. An hour later, they were asked to consume as much food as they could.

The results revealed that those who exercised, apart from burning calories, also ate more than the volunteers who remained idle. But, the alarming part of the research was that the amount of calories taken by the exercise group was less than that taken by the inactive group. While the exercise group consumed only 421kcal, the inactive group consumed 565kcal.

Researchers noticed that the hormones PYY, GLP-1 and PP, which is associated with providing indication to the brain when the stomach is full, was found at an increased level in the exercise group. The volunteers also agreed that they felt less hungry during the time food was offered.

The Researcher Dr. Denise Robertson agreed that the study revealed the fact that exercise after meals could prove beneficial for people who were trying to shed those extra pounds. He also agreed that the research indicates that alteration in appetite could help people lose weight, and that, the common notion that people ate more after work outs, might be a false notion, after-all.
