Tension headache: Is caused due to the tightening of the muscles around the neck and face. It is usually a mild headache either in the forehead or back of the head, neck pain or shoulder pain that travels to the head. Tension headaches could be caused due to long hours of work in the computer, or prolonged hours of reading, sleeping and stress.
Sinus Headache: Sinus headaches are trigged when there is a pressure built up in the sinuses due to inability to drain off the fluids by the nose. It is characterized by pain in the cheek, bones, nose, forehead and blocked nose, with an increase in intensity of headache when the face is touched or bent down. Sinus headaches are caused by common cold, polluted water, air travel and dust allergies.
Migraine Headache: Is caused due to excess dilation or constriction of the blood vessels of the head and is said to be more common in women. It is characterized by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea etc. Migraine headaches could be hereditary, or due to other factors like alcohol, caffeine, menstruation in women, irregular sleep pattern, strenuous exercise and stress.
Though all the said headaches are common, it is suggested that a physician should be approached in case the development of headache is very rapid, if there is a lack of concentration and alertness, difficulty experienced while talking, walking or change in vision or when dizziness is experienced, headache caused due to injury or when accompanied by fever.
