The Sanskrit word Vajra refers to “diamond” or “thunderbolt”. The body is kept as rigid as diamond in this posture. Vajrasana is a basic posture for many other Asanas and is considered as a meditative posture. While adopting this posture for meditation, one must close his eyes during the final stage. This posture is however not advisable for individuals suffering from Piles.
DESCRIPTION
- Sit on the floor with extended legs, hands placed on either sides of the body with palms resting on the floor, fingers together and pointing forward.
- Fold the right leg at the knee, placing the right foot beneath the right buttock, with the sole of the feet kept inside.
- Fold the left leg at the knee, placing the left foot beneath left buttock.
- Both feet should be kept in such a way that the heels remain out, toes inside and the soles pointing upward.
- Hands should be placed on respective thigh.
- The neck, head and spine should be kept straight and eyes kept closed.
- Breathe gently for three minutes before returning to original position. While doing so, gently bend a little towards right and remove the left leg and vice versa.
BENEFITS
This posture is excellent for strengthening the thigh and calf muscles. It is used for meditation, relaxation, to rest in between the Asanas and for increasing digestion.
