Various studies have revealed yoga to be an effective therapy in reducing the intensity and frequency of Asthma bouts.
Yoga, which includes Pranayama (breathing), is not only great for meditation, but also for the lungs. It increases the air capacity, air flow, efficiency and stamina of lungs. Different Pranayama techniques such as the ‘Breath of Fire’, where quick exhalations are performed through the nostrils, while also pumping abdominal muscles and releasing dormant air from the body, are considered effective for those with Asthma.
Also deep breathing exercises such as inhaling deeply, holding the breath for a few seconds and then exhaling, is considered beneficial for Asthmatic patients. However, this should be done a few times so as to ensure that one doesn’t hold on the breath for too long a period – one should not feel uncomfortable while doing it.
Also certain postures such as the ‘Back bending’ posture, opens up the chest, improving the functioning of both heart and the lungs. During an asthma attack, if a patient is experiencing trouble exhaling, upper back bending postures and chest opening postures such as the ‘Wheel’ and the ‘Camel’ posture could be practiced. However, these exercises should be practiced only as a regular exercise routine by Asthmatic patients and not at the time of an attack.
Inverted postures such as the ‘Downward Facing Dog’ and headstands helps drain excess mucus from the lungs and keeps the immune system balanced.
Finally relaxation postures such as the ‘Savasana’ helps regulate breath, while also lowering the anxiety levels, so that apart from preventing an attack, it helps the patient to remain calm during an attack.
