Yoga and Its Philosophy

Yoga is an applied science of body and mind, which originates from the Vedic scriptures. The study and practice of yoga helps in bringing about a natural balance between mind and body which obviously leads to a good state of health. Though Yoga, by itself will not create good health, it definitely helps by creating an environment within oneself through which individuals can reach their own level of active balance.

Yoga is considered as a set of physical performances which include simple stretches, deep breathing and relaxation techniques. These practices are also believed to prepare the mind for meditative practice. They help in developing the capability to withdraw ones senses from the external world, improves concentration on the work at hand, and this concentration leads to a world of inner calmness. This calmness is experienced at some time or the other by most people who regularly perform yoga.

The perspective of yoga is that a person is considered healthy when there is harmony of mind, body and soul in that person. Good health is achieved through natural and simple diet, regular exercise in a non-polluted environment, and by having a calm and untroubled mind. Hence, yoga is being considered as a philosophy which provides an insight into all aspects pertaining to life, be it physical, mental or spiritual. Otherwise, one can even be equally satisfied by considering it only as a physical therapy. 

The practitioners of yoga are of the opinion that at some point in life, people get dissatisfied with material pleasures that are temporary, and will look out for eternal happiness or eternal bliss. Methods to deal with this state in life were developed by yoga practitioners centuries ago.
