Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, neurological disease, which is often unpredictable and affects the central nervous system. Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) could have trouble in balancing, limbs weakening, falling asleep, difficulty in walking and anxiety.
Sue Peterson, 56, was diagnosed with a case of progressive MS and hence could not join a regular yoga class. She, along with three other MS patients, formed a group and participated in activities that could keep their joints moving and as supple as possible. This led to the beginning of the special needs yoga class.
Peterson says “I feel my very best when I am doing yoga, when I am in this class”.
Dr. Anthony Reeder, Neurologist, University of Chicago Hospitals, says “Activities like yoga and walking help patch up the damages and re-educates the brain. Yoga is low impact and aides with its endurance and balance.
The yoga classes are not an actual cure for MS, but one can find surely relief in symptoms and at times in certain cases, there is progress, as well. A sense of peace and community goes a long way to recovery.
